2025 Pelotonia Awards: Pelotonia-Funded Researcher of the Year, Sameek Roychowdhury, MD, PhD

| December 3, 2025

Each year, we honor a handful of individuals who have gone above and beyond in their support of accelerating innovative cancer research with the Pelotonia Awards. These members of the Pelotonia community are champions in the fight against cancer, embodying the relentless commitment to the mission of Ending Cancer that defines the grassroots movement. Their personal journeys are inspiring, and their extraordinary contributions deserve to celebrated.

The Pelotonia-Funded Researcher of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of a Pelotonia grant recipient. The award highlights the importance of career research funding and how support from the Pelotonia community is making a tangible difference in the work of researchers and the lives of patients.

2025 Pelotonia-Funded Researcher of the Year Award winner: Sameek Roychowdhury, MD, PhD.

Dr. Sameek Roychowdhury, a medical oncologist and researcher at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, exemplifies Pelotonia’s vision: research fueled by community, advancing toward a cancer-free world. A multiple-time recipient of Pelotonia Idea Grants, Dr. Roychowdhury consistently bridges the gap between scientific discovery and patient care. His work centers on precision oncology, using genetic insights to tailor treatments for each individual, bringing new hope to patients and families facing cancer.

The 2025 Pelotonia Idea Grant awarded to Dr. Roychowdhury supports the first-ever nationwide, decentralized clinical trial in oncology. This groundbreaking approach allows patients across the country to participate from their own hometowns, removing barriers to access and expanding Pelotonia’s impact to every zip code.

Beyond the lab, Dr. Roychowdhury is deeply involved in the Pelotonia community. A 15-year Rider, High Roller, and Peloton Captain of Team Buckeye – Sameek’s Geeks, he has raised more than $69,000 to date. He participated in both the 100-mile Ride Weekend route and the 25-mile route and Trail Run/Hike on Gravel Day, living the mission he advances in his research every day.

Dr. Roychowdhury’s dedication demonstrates the transformative impact of Pelotonia funding, showing how every dollar raised becomes a seed for new ideas, new treatments, and new hope. His tireless pursuit of innovation and patient-centered care makes him a powerful example of how science and humanity move forward together.

Congratulations to Dr. Roychowdhury on receiving the 2025 Pelotonia-Funded Researcher of the Year Award!

The 2025 Pelotonia Awards winners were announced and celebrated at Night of Impact on November 18th. If you missed the event, you can watch the program on YouTube here.

Scherer family builds a legacy of giving back

| September 19, 2025

For Mike and Megan Scherer, Pelotonia is more than a ride; it’s a family legacy. Inspired by his father’s cancer journey at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), Mike joined Pelotonia as a Rider in 2010. After his first ride, he faced his own diagnosis and received care at the same hospital that treated his father. Pelotonia became a lifeline, connecting him with a community of fellow Riders and Survivors dedicated to Ending Cancer. Mike continues his active involvement with Pelotonia as a 16-Year Rider and Peloton Captain for Summit Financial Strategies, Inc.
Megan, a nine-year Volunteer, has stood beside Mike every step. Together, they are securing Pelotonia’s future by naming it as a beneficiary of their IRA, ensuring their support for cancer research continues for generations. For the Scherers, planned giving is about legacy: they hope their son learns the importance of giving back and supporting causes that shape lives.

“We want the Pelotonia mission to continue long after our journey through life is over. Including Pelotonia in our estate plan helps continue a mission that has greatly impacted my family,” Mike said.

Their commitment not only honors the journeys of Mike and his father but also looks to the future, driven by the hope that their son, and generations to come, will inherit a world without cancer. In 2021, furthering their dedication to cancer survivorship, Mike and Megan founded Worth the Wait, a charity that empowers young adult cancer survivors on their path to parenthood by providing financial support and educational resources for fertility treatments, adoption, and surrogacy. Through their planned giving, enduring support, and advocacy, the Scherers are ensuring that the fight against cancer continues, inspiring others to give back and build a legacy of hope and progress.

Kids Bike Donations Honor High Rollers’ Commitment

| September 19, 2025

For years, Pelotonia’s High Rollers have exemplified generosity, passion, and a steadfast commitment to our mission. Traditionally, Pelotonia has marked their remarkable achievements with a special swag item as part of their annual Rider gift. Recently, however, thoughtful feedback was provided from the High Roller community: while these items were appreciated, they weren’t always necessary. In the spirit of listening to feedback and continually evolving our experience for the better, Pelotonia set out to reimagine the High Roller gift in a way that would powerfully reflect the values our High Rollers stand for.

In honor of the 2024 High Rollers, Pelotonia chose to make a meaningful, community-driven impact rather than distribute physical gifts. Instead of a swag item, Pelotonia donated brand-new children’s bicycles on behalf of the entire 2024 High Roller community, ensuring that their legacy reaches far beyond the ride.

These bikes provide an opportunity for local children in Central Ohio to more easily navigate their environment, experience the pure joy of cycling, and perhaps plant the seeds for a lifelong love of riding and philanthropy. Through the generosity of last year’s High Rollers, the simple act of giving has opened doors of opportunity and inspiration.

All bicycles were gifted to children at Gladden Community House, a cornerstone organization in Franklinton whose mission is to strengthen the well-being of children, families, seniors, and neighborhoods in Central Ohio.

Gladden House interim CEO Matt Burns expressed how much of an impact the donations will have:

“The generous donation of the bikes to Gladden Community House has served to fill the gap in an incredible way for youth, K-12. Students are able to more easily transport themselves to and from Gladden, the local library, and local markets during the summer and will also serve to help many get to school this fall.”

Pelotonia is excited to continue this heartfelt tradition for the 2025 High Rollers by distributing children’s bicycles at the Pelotonia Kids Linden ride.

As Eric Olsavsky, Pelotonia’s Vice President of Community Engagement & Partnerships, shared: “This shift is about making a lasting difference in honor of our High Rollers, whose unwavering spirit inspires everything we do.”

Matt Burns, Interim CEO of Gladden House

Thank you, Pelotonia, for stepping in and helping to close the gap.

The Adventures of Dennis Jacob and Buddy the Bike

| September 19, 2025

Dennis Jacob’s journey with Pelotonia began not just as a cycling challenge, but as a deeply personal mission. In February 2016, Dennis underwent prostate cancer surgery. As he recovered, he set his sights on Pelotonia as both a goal and a symbol of hope.

“I used my first Pelotonia ride as motivation during my recovery,” Dennis said.

That same year, his boss and friend, Rick Germain, launched their company’s first Pelotonia team, offering teammates the choice between fundraising support or a gift card toward a proper road bike. Dennis, then only equipped with a hefty mountain bike, seized the opportunity for a new road bike, one that would become his steadfast companion, affectionately named “Buddy.”

During the next six years, Dennis and Buddy logged an estimated 14,000 miles and participated in seven Pelotonia Ride Weekends, tackling at least 100 miles each year. The pair shared countless moments: cheers from the crowd, laughter with friends, and even a few tears on the toughest stretches. These rides were filled with reminders of why Pelotonia matters: Survivors, patients, and families affected by cancer.

“That bike healed me, kept me sane. It made it possible for me to ride for those who can’t, and the people who love them,” he said.

Dennis, now a 10-Year Rider and Captain of the Germain Peloton, was gifted the bike of his dreams — a Trek Domane SLR6 — in 2023 by his brother and sister-in-law in memory of their daughter, Stevie Rae, a proud supporter of Dennis’ Pelotonia efforts. With the gifted road bike and a newly purchased gravel bike, space was getting tight, and Dennis faced a dilemma: what to do with Buddy? The answer came when he learned about the Pelotonia Bike Fleet. Although an emotional decision because Dennis had been through so much with Buddy, donating the bike meant it would continue its journey, helping others ride for a cure.

For Dennis, giving Buddy to Pelotonia is more than a donation; it’s a continuation of a legacy of hope, healing, and community. Buddy was welcomed with excitement into a new home for the 2025 ride season!

Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington Returns for Another Year to Make an Impact on Pediatric Cancer Research

| August 20, 2025

Pelotonia Kids is a series of kids cycling events to engage the next generation of Pelotonia participants. In collaboration with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC—James), 100 percent of every Pelotonia Kids participant-raised dollar will be directed to innovative pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community members with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington was one of the original community rides that inspired the official launch of the Pelotonia Kids program in 2024. This ride is organized by longtime Pelotonia supporters Sarah Jane Germain and Paul Germain, a 12-year Rider.

“Pelotonia is a uniquely wonderful experience, whether you’re a Rider or a spectator. Kids feel the positive energy as they watch their parents ride, and they really want to be a part of it, too. That’s why we created Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington,” Sarah Jane said.

The idea of hosting a kids ride began in the Germain family’s backyard years ago. Leigh Germain, then a playful two-year-old, adored the Pelotonia experience after watching her father and relatives participate. Leigh would often ask her parents to “play” Pelotonia, and the family created a scooter course in the backyard, complete with a Pelotonia-style finish line. Each time she crossed, Leigh would proudly wear one of Paul’s Rider medals to celebrate her finish.
Around this same time, Sarah Jane’s mother and Leigh’s grandmother, Joanie Dugger, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The Germain family was already involved with Pelotonia, but Joanie’s diagnosis deepened their commitment. Joanie believed so deeply in the Pelotonia mission, and she loved how much her granddaughter was already invested in the experience that was driving such a meaningful impact. Prior to her passing from cancer in 2019, Joanie had often suggested that Leigh’s birthday party theme should be Pelotonia. That idea ultimately planted the seed for Sarah Jane and Paul to start the kids ride in Upper Arlington.
Leigh is joined by her siblings Lucy and Gordy as Pelotonia Kids Riders. The Germains are proud to see how their children, extended family, and community have embraced Pelotonia’s mission and are excited that Pelotonia Kids will continue to grow through stories like theirs.
Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington held its first official ride in 2022. Since then, Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington has raised more than $74,000. The Germains are hoping this year’s fundraising will help the annual event cross $85,000 in total dollars raised since inception. Each year, roughly 200-275 kids have participated.
Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington 2025 will take place on Saturday, August 23. Now in its fourth year, the ride is held annually at the Jones Middle School track. Check-in will begin at 8:30am with the ride kicking off at 9:00am.
The ride is open to children 12 and younger — with big kids on bikes, toddlers on scooters, and even babies in strollers joining the fun. Children ages 5 and older will ride the “around the block” course with police supervision: beginning on Coventry, turning left on Waltham, left on Barrington, left on Andover, left on Guilford, and returning to Coventry. Younger riders on trikes, scooters, and strollers will ride laps around the Jones Middle School track.
There is no registration fee, but donations of any amount are encouraged. Families are invited to challenge their kids to raise funds in support of their ride and to show how even the smallest Riders can make a big impact.
After Riders cross the finish line they will receive a Lion’s Cub cookie, a backpack filled with Pelotonia swag, including a medal, and plenty of snacks to celebrate their accomplishment.

“We always strive to make the ride as fun and memorable as possible for the kids, while giving it the same sense of excitement and tradition as the adult ride. Riders receive their t-shirts ahead of time and arrive ready to roll. Brutus Buckeye is there to welcome them, while parents and families cheer from the sidelines,” Sarah Jane said.

Huntington Amplifies Pelotonia’s Mission With Vendor Engagement

| July 20, 2025

Since joining Pelotonia’s mission in 2009, Huntington Bank has raised more than $45 million for innovative cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) — a remarkable achievement resulting from forward-thinking strategies that reach far beyond traditional donation drives.

For years, Huntington fostered relationships with vendors through classic fundraising events such as charity shoots and golf outings. While these events built a strong foundation, the bank recognized the need to create deeper, more meaningful connections. In 2024, Huntington introduced a new initiative designed to unite vendors from across the country and a wide range of industries — including technology, finance, security, real estate, and creative strategy — behind Pelotonia’s mission and highlight the tangible impact of Huntington’s support.

“At Huntington, we believe in the power of partnership to drive purpose,” said Huntington Bank’s Chief Financial Officer Zach Wasserman.

“By engaging with our vendors, we’re able to amplify the mission of Pelotonia — accelerating cancer research and bringing hope to countless lives. Each of these collaborators plays a vital role in helping us move further, faster, together.”

The inaugural Huntington Pelotonia Night of Impact Partner Event marked a significant evolution in engagement. Vendors and leaders from both Huntington and Pelotonia gathered for an evening that blended inspiration, education, and action. The event featured a panel discussion with Joe Apgar, CEO of Pelotonia, and Dr. John Warner, CEO of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, providing insights into the latest advancements in cancer research. Attendees also enjoyed exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours of the OSUCCC – James Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology and the Medical Modeling, Materials and Manufacturing (M4) labs, offering a firsthand look at the groundbreaking work their contributions support.
At the event, Huntington invited vendors to join Team Huntington through tiered commitment levels, which included opportunities to ride and attend the Huntington Rally, a gathering held before Pelotonia’s Opening Ceremony each year that brings colleagues from across the country together to celebrate their collective efforts and kick off Ride Weekend. The inaugural event was considered a resounding success, raising more than $750,000 for innovative cancer research.
Building on the momentum of its first Night of Impact, Huntington hosted the event again in 2025, setting an ambitious new goal: to raise $1.5 million from vendors — doubling the previous year’s achievement. This bold target reflected both the growing enthusiasm among vendors and the urgent need to accelerate progress against cancer.
The 2025 event offered an even more immersive experience to a wider audience, doubling the invitation list to more than 30 vendor companies. Attendees heard a welcome from Steve Steinour, Chairman, President, and CEO of Huntington Bancshares Inc., followed by a fireside chat with Joe Apgar and Dr. Glen Barber, director of the Center for Innate Immunity and Inflammation and globally renowned researcher. Throughout dinner, Huntington executives and the OSUCCC – James researchers joined each table, fostering meaningful conversations about the real-world impact of vendor support. A panel discussion, moderated by Huntington CFO Zach Wasserman, featured Dr. Sameek Roychowdhury, a medical oncologist and member of the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James, and a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Pharmacology at Ohio State, and Dr. Gina Sizemore, co-leader of the Cancer Biology Program at the OSUCCC – James and an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Ohio State, who shared stories of how Pelotonia funding is transforming cancer research and treatment.
The second annual event closed with the same call to action, asking business vendors to join Huntington in supporting Pelotonia. Since the April event, vendors have already pledged significant support for 2025, further fueling Team Huntington’s impact.
In 2024, Team Huntington raised $4.2 million through the combined efforts of more than 2,700 participants, including nearly 200 business vendors. This incredible feat demonstrates the power of collaboration and shared purpose in the fight against cancer. So far in 2025, Team Huntington has rallied more than 2,800 participants and raised more than $938,000 toward innovative cancer research and counting.

“Pelotonia is integral to our culture because it brings us together for a cause greater than ourselves. It unites us in the fight against cancer and demonstrates how much we can accomplish as partners,” said Brant Standridge, Senior Executive Vice President and President of Consumer and Regional Banking at Huntington Bank.

Team Buckeye Hosts First Pelotonia Kids Ride: Biking with Brutus

| July 17, 2025

Pelotonia Kids is a series of kids cycling events to engage the next generation of Pelotonia participants. In collaboration with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC—James), 100 percent of every Pelotonia Kids participant-raised dollar will be directed to innovative pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Team Buckeye, a 17-year super peloton for Pelotonia, is adding a Pelotonia Kids ride to its lineup: Biking with Brutus! Team Buckeye has raised more than $40 million in all-time funds.
Biking with Brutus is set for Sunday, July 27, on the Fred Beekman Park Trail. The park address is 2200 Carmack Rd, Columbus, OH 43210.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community members with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
This ride was created by Julie Kennerly-Shah , 7-year Rider and a pharmacist at The James at Ohio State. After her two sons participated in a Pelotonia Kids ride in 2024, Julie felt moved to expand the opportunity, encouraging more children to get involved and helping raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

“Partnering with Team Buckeye to organize Biking with Brutus felt like the natural next step. I work every day at The James Cancer Hospital,” Julie said.

“My husband, Summit, cares for children with cancer at Nationwide Children’s. The fact that the Kids Ride directly supports cancer research at Nationwide makes this personal for both of us — professionally and as parents.”

Julie’s sons Oliver (age 5) and Emmett (age 6) are ready to ride and join Pelotonia’s mission.

“Our family rides in Pelotonia every year, and now it’s our turn to help, too!” Oliver and Emmett said.

“We want to be part of the mission to cure cancer. We’ve seen how hard our parents work, and how much it matters. So, this summer, we’re riding our bikes in our own kid version of Pelotonia to raise money and show we care.”

Check-in for Biking with Brutus starts at 2:00pm, and the ride begins at 2:30pm. The route consists of a one-mile loop on the Fred Beekman Park Trail. The ride will start on the south side of the parking lot along the trail and finish just past the Pelotonia Research Center.
Children age 8 and younger are welcome to participate. Younger participants can be pushed in strollers, or ride scooters or tricycles. While there’s no registration fee, a $25 donation per Rider is encouraged.
If you’d like to volunteer to setup, assist during the ride, or help with cleanup, please reach out to Julie at julie.kennerly-shah@osumc.edu.

SpokesKids Returns to Granville to Host Riders Ages 8-14

| July 8, 2025

Pelotonia Kids is a series of kids cycling events to engage the next generation of Pelotonia participants. In collaboration with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC—James), 100 percent of every Pelotonia Kids participant-raised dollar will be directed to innovative pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
SpokesKids returns to Granville on Saturday, July 26, inviting youth participants ages 8 to 14 to take part in a powerful community event that blends purpose with fun.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community volunteers with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
Founded in 2017 by a group of determined kids who weren’t yet old enough to ride in Pelotonia, SpokesKIDS began as a way for them to support loved ones facing cancer. What started as a grassroots idea has now grown into a powerful youth movement, proving year after year that kids can absolutely make an impact.
Now organized by Brittany Smith and Kelly Clarry, SpokesKids has raised nearly $75,000 for pediatric cancer since starting.
Brittany and Kelly each have deeply personal connections to cancer. Kelly’s husband, Yuri, passed away in 2017 after battling stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. For Kelly, the Kids Ride became a meaningful way to help her sons, Oliver and William, feel supported by a community that understands their journey.
Brittany’s husband, Tim, is a cancer survivor. A medically retired firefighter, Tim was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2018, and their family’s experience continues to inspire their involvement.
Brittany’s son, Gavin, has been instrumental in organizing SpokesKids during the past three years. Now 14, Gavin was only 7 years old when his father was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, he has worked with several charities and advocacy groups, using his voice to champion lung cancer research and raise awareness.

“Pelotonia kids provides an opportunity for kids to make a difference. We have several families in our community who have been affected by not only pediatric cancer, but also parents who have battled cancer. This gives kids the opportunity to make a difference and support their friends and family,” said Brittany.

Beginning at OneLove Café and Bike Shop (415 South Main Street, Granville, OH 43023), this 8-mile ride offers young Riders the chance to make a meaningful difference in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Every SpokesKids participant commits to raising a minimum of $100, and thanks to Pelotonia’s 100% model, every dollar raised will directly support pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Since its inception, SpokesKIDS has raised over $50,000, and the momentum continues to build.
This year’s ride will take place on Saturday, July 26, at OneLove Café and Bike Shop in Granville. Rider check-in will take place from 10:00am to 10:30am, with the official ride send-off at 11:00am. Riders will travel an 8-mile route along the T.J. Evans Trail, which includes a scenic pass-through downtown Granville.
The route will be fully supported, featuring a Granville Police Department escort and EMS support from the Granville Fire Department to ensure a safe experience for all participants. Helmets and closed-toe shoes are required for all riders.
Whether you’re riding with friends, family, a school group, or on your own, SpokesKIDS welcomes all children ages 8 to14, regardless of school district or Peloton affiliation. This event is all about coming together to support one another and raise funds for lifesaving research. No matter where you’re from or who you’re riding for, you can help make a difference.
Follow updates on the Pelotonia social media channels. Read more about the Pelotonia Kids program and upcoming rides at pelotoniakids.com, or donate to SpokesKids to support pediatric cancer research.
And don’t forget: there are two Pelotonia Kids rides happening in Granville on July 26: SpokesKIDS for ages 8 to14, and SpokesKIDS Jr. for children in pre-K through 3rd grade.
