2025 Volunteer Spotlight: Colleen O’Shea

| April 24, 2025

In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 20–26), we’re proud to honor the more than 3,000 incredible individuals who make Pelotonia possible. These Volunteers are the heart of our mission to end cancer, and their time, energy, and passion fuel every mile and every moment. Without our Volunteers, the mission simply wouldn’t be possible. This week, we’re excited to spotlight five outstanding Volunteers on our social media channels.
We are excited to highlight Colleen O’Shea, our Lead Photography Volunteer. This year marks Colleen’s 14th year participating in Pelotonia. After losing her 13-year-old cousin, Ryan, to Osteosarcoma in 2008, her family found a sense of community in Pelotonia when her brother and sister decided to ride.
Colleen’s favorite part of volunteering is interacting with Riders, Volunteers, and Spectators along the route.  “Everyone in the Pelotonia community has a story about how cancer has impacted their life. As a photographer, I have the opportunity to capture their tears and triumphs throughout the weekend, and that means a lot, knowing the reason why they’re all there.”
One of Colleen’s most impactful Pelotonia memories happened in 2021, when she was photographing the chute at the New Albany finish line. A Rider and Survivor had just finished an incredible 100-mile ride, and Colleen expected him to lift his bike in celebration. However, he instead fell to his knees, overcome with emotion. Colleen continued photographing to capture the moment and found herself becoming emotional as well. “This is the type of moment that reminds you what Ride Weekend is all about,” Colleen said.
When asked for advice for people interested in volunteering with Pelotonia, Colleen said “Don’t be afraid to jump in. This community is full of so many amazing people with so many stories of how cancer has impacted their lives. Everyone has been affected by it in some way, so you’re not alone here. Talk to people learn their why. Not only can you have an impact on someone during Ride Weekend, this whole community will have an impact on you.”
Colleen’s story is a beautiful reminder that Pelotonia is an incredible community. Thank you, Colleen, for your continued participation in Pelotonia and for capturing our favorite moments!

2025: Volunteer Spotlight: Cathy & Patrick Hreachmack

| April 23, 2025

In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 20–26), we’re proud to honor the more than 3,000 incredible individuals who make Pelotonia possible. These Volunteers are the heart of our mission to end cancer, and their time, energy, and passion fuel every mile and every moment. Without our Volunteers, the mission simply wouldn’t be possible. This week, we’re excited to spotlight five outstanding Volunteers on our social media channels.
We’re honored to introduce Cathy and Patrick Hreachmack, dedicated volunteers who have been part of the Pelotonia community for 13 years. Cathy began volunteering while working as a Nurse Practitioner at The James in an effort to support her cancer patients. Patrick, a cancer Survivor, wanted to volunteer to support fundraising effors. Together, they’ve become an integral part of the Support and Gear (SAG) team, providing first aid and vital rider support.
For Cathy and Patrick, the best part of volunteering with Pelotonia is the camaraderie among fellow volunteers, especially the SAG team. One of their favorite memories is being recognized and warmly greeted year after year, a testament to the lasting connections they’ve built. They’re also committed to making sure every Rider has the opportunity to cross the finish line. One year, they even drove an injured rider through the finish line chute to the first aid tent so they could complete their ride.
When asked what advice they’d give to someone thinking about volunteering with Pelotonia, they shared: “Learn about all of the volunteer opportunities and choose something you’ll truly enjoy.”
Both Cathy and Patrick cherish quotes that showcase their strong commitment to volunteering. Cathy lives by a quote from Mother Theresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
Patrick lives by a quote from Robert G. Ingersoll: “We rise by lifting others.”
Cathy and Patrick’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of connection and the incredible community behind Pelotonia. Thank you, Cathy and Patrick, for your continued participation!

2025 Volunteer Spotlight: Julia Bistriceanu

| April 22, 2025

In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 20–26), we’re proud to honor the more than 3,000 incredible individuals who make Pelotonia possible. These Volunteers are the heart of our mission to end cancer, and their time, energy, and passion fuel every mile and every moment. Without our Volunteers, the mission simply wouldn’t be possible. This week, we’re excited to spotlight five outstanding Volunteers on our social media channels.
Next up, meet Julia Bistriceanu, an 11-year Volunteer. Julia was first inspired to give her time to Pelotonia while working in the nutrition department at the OSUCCC – James. Throughout her career journey, she continues to sign up for Pelotonia, even if her employer isn’t participating, which showcases her commitment to the cause.
Julia believes service in the community is a pillar of the American spirit. Her favorite part of volunteering with Pelotonia is the strong sense of community. She is continually moved by the stories of fellow Volunteers and finds deep inspiration in their shared commitment.
Over the years, Julia has played a key role as a Sustainability Volunteer during Ride Weekend. In this role, she helps set up compost, recycling, and landfill receptacles and signage — and manages waste stations to ensure participants and spectators properly dispose of items.
She’s also volunteered with the Support and Gear (SAG) team, which ensures no Rider is left behind. One of Julia’s most memorable experiences came four years ago, while serving on the SAG team. She followed and encouraged the last Rider on the 100-mile route, who was riding on a beach cruiser bike in memory of her friend, Mugsy Reynolds. That encounter sparked a lasting friendship, and the two are now in the process of planning a Pelotonia fundraising event in Florida, where the Rider lives.
When asked what advice she’d offer to someone considering volunteering with Pelotonia, Julia shared: “Volunteer opportunities are very diverse with Pelotonia. Everyone is super friendly, and if you’re joining alone, new connections are easily formed. It’s wonderful to see everyone at Pelotonia events and catch up on life’s adventures. The fulfillment you’ll experience after getting involved is beyond expectation.”
Julia lives by a quote from Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Fight for things you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
Julia’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of connection and the incredible community behind Pelotonia. Thank you, Julia, for your continued participation!

2025 Volunteer Spotlight: Megan Kruse

| April 21, 2025

In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 20–26), we’re proud to honor the more than 3,000 incredible individuals who make Pelotonia possible. These Volunteers are the heart of our mission to end cancer, and their time, energy, and passion fuel every mile and every moment. Without our Volunteers, the mission simply wouldn’t be possible. This week, we’re excited to spotlight five outstanding Volunteers on our social media channels.
Kicking off the week, we’re highlighting Megan Kruse, a dedicated Volunteer of eight years with Pelotonia. She has also been a Rider for seven years.
Inspired by her father’s diagnosis when she was in high school, Megan decided to volunteer with Pelotonia as a way to give back. Thankfully, Megan’s father, Jack, is now cancer-free, and her family credits this positive outcome to teams of researchers, doctors, and nurses. Although Megan lives outside of Ohio, she makes an annual trip to participate as a Volunteer and Rider. In fact, Pelotonia has become a meaningful experience for Megan’s family. Both her parents volunteer and ride, as well as her boyfriend, Matt, who has volunteered for the past four years.
Megan’s favorite thing about volunteering for Pelotonia is reuniting with the same dedicated group of volunteers year after year, especially with her groups Lead Volunteer, Shirley Jordan. “We’ve built a strong team setting up bike racks together,” Megan said, praising the connections she’s built during her time volunteering on Bike Rack Setup and Bike Management, which is responsible for handling the setup and organization of bike racks at Opening Ceremony.
The powerful connections Megan has formed through Pelotonia extend outside of volunteering as well. While living in Pittsburgh, Megan was training alone for the 104-mile ride and expected to ride solo during Ride Weekend. However, she started chatting with a fellow Rider, Kristi, and the two bonded through the power of their inspiring stories. Before they knew it, Megan and Kristi crossed the finish line together,  a new friendship formed along the way.
Another Pelotonia moment that has stuck with Megan was at the 2023 Opening Ceremony. Pelotonia Vice Chair Doug Ulman said, “Don’t you want to know what happens when you don’t give up?” Megan said the quote was so powerful, she keeps it on a Post-it note by her monitor, so she can always be reminded of the message.
When asked for advice for people interested in Volunteering in Pelotonia, Megan said, “You are valued and appreciated. Take the time to talk to Riders and fellow Volunteers. You’ll leave feeling connected, inspired and glad you were a part of it.”
Megan’s story is a beautiful reminder that Pelotonia is an incredible community. Thank you, Megan, for your continued participation in Pelotonia as a Volunteer and Rider!

O.A.R. to Headline Opening Ceremony 2025

| March 17, 2025

Platinum-certified band and proud Ohio State alumni, O.A.R., announced as music headliner for Pelotonia Opening Ceremony on August 1, 2025!

O.A.R., the platinum-certified rock band known for songs like “Shattered (Turn The Car Around)” and “That Was A Crazy Game of Poker,” will headline Pelotonia Opening Ceremony 2025 on Friday, August 1 in downtown Columbus. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m.
O.A.R. has deep ties to Columbus, with its members being alumni of The Ohio State University, making this headliner performance even more meaningful as 100 percent of dollars raised by Pelotonia participants are directed to innovative cancer research at their alma mater.
Since 1996, the band has sold out Madison Square Garden twice, filled Red Rocks Amphitheater a dozen times, earned platinum and gold plaques, lit up the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, and built one of the most committed fanbases in the world.
O.A.R. entered a new chapter as a band by releasing their 10th studio album “The Arcade” in 2022 and they recently concluded a very successful headlining tour with special guests Fitz and the Tantrums and Ripe. O.A.R. most recently performed live in Columbus for a pre-game concert prior to the 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium on March 1.
The acclaimed rock band includes Marc Roberge (lead vocals, guitar), Richard On (lead guitar, backing vocals), Chris Culos (drums), Benj Gershman (bass), and Columbus native Jerry DePizzo (saxophone, guitar, backing vocals) accompanied by Mikel Paris (keys, backing vocals, percussion) and Jon Lampley (trumpet, backing vocals).
O.A.R. has a joyful, community-building spirit that shines through their music and in their actions both on and off the stage. The band was formed in Rockville, Maryland, but its members like to say they were raised on Ohio State’s campus—and they’ve continued to give back to the university as their success has grown. As proud alumni, O.A.R. has partnered with The Ohio State University Foundation through the Scarlet and Grey Advantage program providing a yearly full scholarship to students hailing from Northeast Ohio, the childhood home of Jerry DePizzo. This effort is part of the Heard the World fund created by O.A.R. in 2006 to support youth and education in the U.S.
For more than 25 years, O.A.R. fans across Ohio and around the world have enjoyed their free-flowing sound and exhilarating live shows. Pelotonia is excited to bring the energy of O.A.R. to the Opening Ceremony stage to rally its community and set the tone for Ride Weekend with an unforgettable rock performance.

2024 Impact Report Now Available

In collaboration with OSUCCC – James, Pelotonia released its 2024 Impact Report to share the community events and innovative initiatives which inspire the philanthropy accelerating critical funds for innovative cancer research. The annual report provides updates from the OSUCCC – James on Pelotonia-funded research and investments made with the support of Pelotonia dollars.
Research highlights within the report include:
  • Support from Pelotonia funding paved the way for OSUCCC – James researchers to receive a five-year, $3.04 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to study a new CAR T-cell therapy being tested in a first-in-human trial for aggressive blood cancers.
  • Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the OSUCCC – James opened a $100 million, 55,000-square-foot Proton Therapy Center. The state-of-the-art facility offers highly targeted radiation therapy for treating complex tumors for both adult and pediatric patients at a single location.
  • new cancer drug discovered and developed at Ohio State will soon be used for cancer treatment as part of a phase I, first-in-human clinical trial available only at the OSUCCC – James. The trial will first enroll patients with solid tumors and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
  • Researchers at the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology are testing a new cell-based immunotherapy for patients with Stage IV lung cancer. Newly released 2024 Impact Report focuses on community

| February 28, 2025

The 2024 Impact Report is now available!

The 2024 Impact Report honors COMMUNITY, the powerful force inspiring impact far beyond what we could’ve imagined.
This annual Impact Report is a collaboration between Pelotonia and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). In its pages, you’ll explore highlights from community events and innovative initiatives which inspire the philanthropy accelerating critical funds for innovative cancer research at the OSUCCC – James.
The Pelotonia community came together in a big way in 2024, and there is a lot to celebrate. The incredible progress made in cancer research over the past 16 years has in large part been fueled by the generosity and tireless efforts of the tens of thousands of people who make up this community. Each person has played a pivotal role in powering better treatments and saving lives today, and will have a lasting impact on the future.
In 2023, Pelotonia released its first impact report, 15 Years of Impact, which included community stories and Pelotonia-funded research updates from the first fifteen years of the grassroots movement.
Now, the organization plans to release an annual report in collaboration with the OSUCCC – James to highlight community stories and advancements in cancer research made possible through Pelotonia funding.
We hope the stories in this report not only honor those who are making a difference through their support of Pelotonia, but also inspire even more to participate and give in the coming year to help further our collective mission of Ending Cancer.

Pelotonia 2025 Theme announced: together as one

| February 14, 2025

Each Pelotonia year kicks off with a new creative theme, arrow design, and messaging to support your fundraising efforts and rally together as a community of Riders, Challengers, and Volunteers committed to accelerating innovative cancer research at the OSUCCC – James.
In 2024, we introduced an evolved brand tagline and that remains our singular mission: Ending Cancer.

The Pelotonia 2025 theme is: Together as One.

Together, we’re accelerating the fight against cancer, but it’s about more than that. We’re a community empowering communities to boldly move forward for the greater good. As one, we’re inspiring change. Together, we’re driving progress.
This theme celebrates the power of community. The collective impact of tens of thousands of people focused on a single purpose. When we ride together, rally together, and fundraise together, our collective impact is greater. We can do more than ever thought possible when we all focus on One Goal.
Together as One, the Pelotonia community will make this our biggest year yet.
Watch the Pelotonia 2025 Launch Video here!
The 2025 arrow represents forward progress.

Animated to represent ongoing momentum, the arrow leaves behind a mark, similar to the unprecedented mark this community has made on breakthroughs in cancer research since the first Ride Weekend in 2009.

Emotional, energetic photos celebrate community moments – big and small.

From billboards to social media posts and event signage, you’ll see close-up photography shots of a fist bump, high five, hug, and more. These photos highlight the incredible moments of individuals interacting and expressing joy and hope – each personal moment that makes the Pelotonia experience special.
The “tread” reminds us of the path we’re on together.
Designed to look like a bike tire tread, this creative execution of the Together as One message represents the journey of the Pelotonia community – with a literal nod to the tires that grip the pavement and gravel as Riders make an impact with every mile they ride and every hill they climb.
2025 yard signs and car magnets coming soon!
The new yard signs and car magnets incorporate the tread – which you’ll see in gray and black and in shades of green – aiming to catch your attention, spark interest, and generate excitement for the year ahead. You will be able to pick them up starting Launch Week (March 3 – March 7) at the new Pelotonia office. Throughout Launch Week, we will be hosting Pelotonia HQ Open Houses – the perfect opportunity to stop by!
In this kit, you’ll find logos and guidelines, 2025 theme graphics for peloton jersey designs and social media sharing, and several digital assets to use in updating your profiles and to support your fundraising this year.
Registration opens March 5 at noon EST!
We hope the new theme inspires you to join us, whether it’s your first time or your 17th year!
Pelotonia RiderVolunteer, and Challenger registration opens in less than three weeks for Ride Weekend on August 2-3 and Gravel Day on October 4.
