Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington Returns for Another Year to Make an Impact on Pediatric Cancer Research

| August 20, 2025

Pelotonia Kids is a series of kids cycling events to engage the next generation of Pelotonia participants. In collaboration with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC—James), 100 percent of every Pelotonia Kids participant-raised dollar will be directed to innovative pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community members with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington was one of the original community rides that inspired the official launch of the Pelotonia Kids program in 2024. This ride is organized by longtime Pelotonia supporters Sarah Jane Germain and Paul Germain, a 12-year Rider.

“Pelotonia is a uniquely wonderful experience, whether you’re a Rider or a spectator. Kids feel the positive energy as they watch their parents ride, and they really want to be a part of it, too. That’s why we created Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington,” Sarah Jane said.

The idea of hosting a kids ride began in the Germain family’s backyard years ago. Leigh Germain, then a playful two-year-old, adored the Pelotonia experience after watching her father and relatives participate. Leigh would often ask her parents to “play” Pelotonia, and the family created a scooter course in the backyard, complete with a Pelotonia-style finish line. Each time she crossed, Leigh would proudly wear one of Paul’s Rider medals to celebrate her finish.
Around this same time, Sarah Jane’s mother and Leigh’s grandmother, Joanie Dugger, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The Germain family was already involved with Pelotonia, but Joanie’s diagnosis deepened their commitment. Joanie believed so deeply in the Pelotonia mission, and she loved how much her granddaughter was already invested in the experience that was driving such a meaningful impact. Prior to her passing from cancer in 2019, Joanie had often suggested that Leigh’s birthday party theme should be Pelotonia. That idea ultimately planted the seed for Sarah Jane and Paul to start the kids ride in Upper Arlington.
Leigh is joined by her siblings Lucy and Gordy as Pelotonia Kids Riders. The Germains are proud to see how their children, extended family, and community have embraced Pelotonia’s mission and are excited that Pelotonia Kids will continue to grow through stories like theirs.
Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington held its first official ride in 2022. Since then, Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington has raised more than $74,000. The Germains are hoping this year’s fundraising will help the annual event cross $85,000 in total dollars raised since inception. Each year, roughly 200-275 kids have participated.
Pelotonia Kids Upper Arlington 2025 will take place on Saturday, August 23. Now in its fourth year, the ride is held annually at the Jones Middle School track. Check-in will begin at 8:30am with the ride kicking off at 9:00am.
The ride is open to children 12 and younger — with big kids on bikes, toddlers on scooters, and even babies in strollers joining the fun. Children ages 5 and older will ride the “around the block” course with police supervision: beginning on Coventry, turning left on Waltham, left on Barrington, left on Andover, left on Guilford, and returning to Coventry. Younger riders on trikes, scooters, and strollers will ride laps around the Jones Middle School track.
There is no registration fee, but donations of any amount are encouraged. Families are invited to challenge their kids to raise funds in support of their ride and to show how even the smallest Riders can make a big impact.
After Riders cross the finish line they will receive a Lion’s Cub cookie, a backpack filled with Pelotonia swag, including a medal, and plenty of snacks to celebrate their accomplishment.

“We always strive to make the ride as fun and memorable as possible for the kids, while giving it the same sense of excitement and tradition as the adult ride. Riders receive their t-shirts ahead of time and arrive ready to roll. Brutus Buckeye is there to welcome them, while parents and families cheer from the sidelines,” Sarah Jane said.

Pelotonia Ride Weekend 2025 Unites Thousands Together as One Community in Ending Cancer on August 1-3

| July 22, 2025

Headliner Opening Ceremony act O.A.R. and new routes bring excitement to signature event

COLUMBUS, Ohio (July 22, 2025) – Pelotonia will host its 17th annual Ride Weekend on August 1-3, 2025, kicking off with Opening Ceremony on Friday evening followed by two days of road cycling with routes ranging in distance from 24 miles to 190 miles. This year, Pelotonia expects more than 10,000 participants throughout Ride Weekend including more than 7,000 Riders, 3,000 Volunteers and countless spectators.
Since 2009, Pelotonia has raised more than $309 million for innovative cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), including The Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology. In 2024, the annual fundraising total was $26.2 million.
“There’s nothing like the energy and purpose of Ride Weekend — my favorite weekend of the year,” said Joe Apgar, CEO of Pelotonia, 15-year Rider and cancer Survivor.
“Tens of thousands of people with a personal connection to cancer come together to fuel bold ideas and support world-class researchers at The James at Ohio State. Their work is leading to lifesaving breakthroughs, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who makes this movement possible.”
W. Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, a nationally recognized leader in cancer research and former director of the National Cancer Institute, recently joined the OSUCCC – James as the new CEO. Dr. Rathmell brings a bold, collaborative vision to accelerate progress in cancer research and care, and Pelotonia is excited to welcome her into its community. Her leadership marks an exciting new chapter in the OSUCCC – James and Pelotonia’s shared mission of ending cancer.
“I was aware that Ohio State had really strong team science previously but it quickly became clear to me that one of the things that makes this place really special is the deep sense of broad community investment in advancing cancer research and care,” Dr. Kim Rathmell said.
“I’m so inspired by the passion of the Pelotonia community. It’s an honor to partner in the pursuit of a cancer-free world, and I’m excited to join my first Ride Weekend alongside thousands who share a deep commitment to driving innovation in research and care.”
Pelotonia’s generous funding partners provide operational support, allowing the organization to direct 100 percent of every participant-raised dollar to innovative cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. New funding partners in 2025 include Abbott and DHL Supply Chain. Longtime and returning funding partners include American Electric Power Foundation, Bath & Body Works, Huntington National Bank, Peggy & Richard Santulli, Victoria’s Secret, Ariel Corporation, The Haslam 3 Foundation, M/I Homes, Safelite, Barbasol, Cardinal Health, Diamond Hill, Nationwide Insurance and Pharmavite.

Opening Ceremony, August 1

Opening Ceremony will take place at McFerson Commons and North Bank Park in the Arena District on Friday, August 1, from 4 to 8 p.m., with early check-in available for Riders to pick up credentials and drop off bikes starting at 11:30 a.m. Guests will enjoy a dinner buffet, beverages, vendor expo, kids zone, and more.
All registered Ride Weekend Riders and Gravel Day Riders, Runners and Hikers receive two tickets for admission to Opening Ceremony. High Rollers, who committed to raise $5,000 for cancer research, will receive four tickets. Additionally, Challengers and Volunteers who have raised $1,250 by July 31 will receive two tickets to the event.
A pop-up shop of branded merchandise will also be onsite, including a new Pelotonia collection designed in collaboration with Homage plus newly released items from Greyson, Lululemon and Nike. These items will be available for sale first in person at Opening Ceremony and at Ride Weekend finish lines before online sales begin at shoppelotonia.org following the event.
Pelotonia announced in March that O.A.R., the platinum-certified rock band known for songs like “Shattered (Turn The Car Around)” and “That Was A Crazy Game of Poker,” will perform as the headliner act for the community celebration.
O.A.R. has deep ties to Columbus, with its members being alumni of The Ohio State University, making this headliner performance even more meaningful as 100 percent of dollars raised by Pelotonia participants are directed to innovative cancer research at their alma mater. For more than 25 years, the band has sold out Madison Square Garden twice, filled Red Rocks Amphitheater a dozen times, earned platinum and gold plaques, lit up the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, and built one of the most committed fanbases in the world. Pelotonia is excited to bring the energy of O.A.R. to the Opening Ceremony stage to rally its community and set the tone for Ride Weekend with an unforgettable rock performance.
O.A.R. is set to perform starting at 7 p.m. following the inspirational stage program which begins at 6:30 p.m.
To help kick off the evening, Ari and Zak Blumer of Clubhouse will DJ on stage from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. An Ohio-born band, Clubhouse was the headliner act for Opening Ceremony 2024. Lead singer Max Reichert performed alongside band members, Ari and Zak, while he was undergoing cancer treatment. This was the band’s last performance on stage together as Max passed away on November 1, after a six-year battle with osteosarcoma. In partnership with Pelotonia, Clubhouse is raising funds for cancer research at clubhouseband.com and through their newly formed Peloton team. A tribute video highlights the band’s Pelotonia experience and honors Max’s legacy. Ari, Zak, and their band managers will also ride 24 miles on Saturday morning.

Huntington Amplifies Pelotonia’s Mission With Vendor Engagement

| July 20, 2025

Since joining Pelotonia’s mission in 2009, Huntington Bank has raised more than $45 million for innovative cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) — a remarkable achievement resulting from forward-thinking strategies that reach far beyond traditional donation drives.

For years, Huntington fostered relationships with vendors through classic fundraising events such as charity shoots and golf outings. While these events built a strong foundation, the bank recognized the need to create deeper, more meaningful connections. In 2024, Huntington introduced a new initiative designed to unite vendors from across the country and a wide range of industries — including technology, finance, security, real estate, and creative strategy — behind Pelotonia’s mission and highlight the tangible impact of Huntington’s support.

“At Huntington, we believe in the power of partnership to drive purpose,” said Huntington Bank’s Chief Financial Officer Zach Wasserman.

“By engaging with our vendors, we’re able to amplify the mission of Pelotonia — accelerating cancer research and bringing hope to countless lives. Each of these collaborators plays a vital role in helping us move further, faster, together.”

The inaugural Huntington Pelotonia Night of Impact Partner Event marked a significant evolution in engagement. Vendors and leaders from both Huntington and Pelotonia gathered for an evening that blended inspiration, education, and action. The event featured a panel discussion with Joe Apgar, CEO of Pelotonia, and Dr. John Warner, CEO of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, providing insights into the latest advancements in cancer research. Attendees also enjoyed exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours of the OSUCCC – James Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology and the Medical Modeling, Materials and Manufacturing (M4) labs, offering a firsthand look at the groundbreaking work their contributions support.
At the event, Huntington invited vendors to join Team Huntington through tiered commitment levels, which included opportunities to ride and attend the Huntington Rally, a gathering held before Pelotonia’s Opening Ceremony each year that brings colleagues from across the country together to celebrate their collective efforts and kick off Ride Weekend. The inaugural event was considered a resounding success, raising more than $750,000 for innovative cancer research.
Building on the momentum of its first Night of Impact, Huntington hosted the event again in 2025, setting an ambitious new goal: to raise $1.5 million from vendors — doubling the previous year’s achievement. This bold target reflected both the growing enthusiasm among vendors and the urgent need to accelerate progress against cancer.
The 2025 event offered an even more immersive experience to a wider audience, doubling the invitation list to more than 30 vendor companies. Attendees heard a welcome from Steve Steinour, Chairman, President, and CEO of Huntington Bancshares Inc., followed by a fireside chat with Joe Apgar and Dr. Glen Barber, director of the Center for Innate Immunity and Inflammation and globally renowned researcher. Throughout dinner, Huntington executives and the OSUCCC – James researchers joined each table, fostering meaningful conversations about the real-world impact of vendor support. A panel discussion, moderated by Huntington CFO Zach Wasserman, featured Dr. Sameek Roychowdhury, a medical oncologist and member of the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James, and a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Pharmacology at Ohio State, and Dr. Gina Sizemore, co-leader of the Cancer Biology Program at the OSUCCC – James and an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Ohio State, who shared stories of how Pelotonia funding is transforming cancer research and treatment.
The second annual event closed with the same call to action, asking business vendors to join Huntington in supporting Pelotonia. Since the April event, vendors have already pledged significant support for 2025, further fueling Team Huntington’s impact.
In 2024, Team Huntington raised $4.2 million through the combined efforts of more than 2,700 participants, including nearly 200 business vendors. This incredible feat demonstrates the power of collaboration and shared purpose in the fight against cancer. So far in 2025, Team Huntington has rallied more than 2,800 participants and raised more than $938,000 toward innovative cancer research and counting.

“Pelotonia is integral to our culture because it brings us together for a cause greater than ourselves. It unites us in the fight against cancer and demonstrates how much we can accomplish as partners,” said Brant Standridge, Senior Executive Vice President and President of Consumer and Regional Banking at Huntington Bank.

Team Buckeye Hosts First Pelotonia Kids Ride: Biking with Brutus

| July 17, 2025

Pelotonia Kids is a series of kids cycling events to engage the next generation of Pelotonia participants. In collaboration with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC—James), 100 percent of every Pelotonia Kids participant-raised dollar will be directed to innovative pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Team Buckeye, a 17-year super peloton for Pelotonia, is adding a Pelotonia Kids ride to its lineup: Biking with Brutus! Team Buckeye has raised more than $40 million in all-time funds.
Biking with Brutus is set for Sunday, July 27, on the Fred Beekman Park Trail. The park address is 2200 Carmack Rd, Columbus, OH 43210.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community members with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
This ride was created by Julie Kennerly-Shah , 7-year Rider and a pharmacist at The James at Ohio State. After her two sons participated in a Pelotonia Kids ride in 2024, Julie felt moved to expand the opportunity, encouraging more children to get involved and helping raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

“Partnering with Team Buckeye to organize Biking with Brutus felt like the natural next step. I work every day at The James Cancer Hospital,” Julie said.

“My husband, Summit, cares for children with cancer at Nationwide Children’s. The fact that the Kids Ride directly supports cancer research at Nationwide makes this personal for both of us — professionally and as parents.”

Julie’s sons Oliver (age 5) and Emmett (age 6) are ready to ride and join Pelotonia’s mission.

“Our family rides in Pelotonia every year, and now it’s our turn to help, too!” Oliver and Emmett said.

“We want to be part of the mission to cure cancer. We’ve seen how hard our parents work, and how much it matters. So, this summer, we’re riding our bikes in our own kid version of Pelotonia to raise money and show we care.”

Check-in for Biking with Brutus starts at 2:00pm, and the ride begins at 2:30pm. The route consists of a one-mile loop on the Fred Beekman Park Trail. The ride will start on the south side of the parking lot along the trail and finish just past the Pelotonia Research Center.
Children age 8 and younger are welcome to participate. Younger participants can be pushed in strollers, or ride scooters or tricycles. While there’s no registration fee, a $25 donation per Rider is encouraged.
If you’d like to volunteer to setup, assist during the ride, or help with cleanup, please reach out to Julie at julie.kennerly-shah@osumc.edu.

Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community volunteers with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
The Cincinnati event is organized by Rachel McCarthy and Emily Wall, two longtime Pelotonia Riders who met at a Pelotonia recruitment event in Cincinnati and quickly joined forces. Cancer research is deeply personal for them. Both have felt cancer’s touch in their families: Rachel lost her father-in-law, and Emily lost her father.

“We hope to engage the next generation in philanthropic efforts, teaching them the importance of giving back as well as how to start an active lifestyle at a young age. Research saves lives, and we are proud to back the incredible minds who are working to put an end to cancer,” said Rachel.

The Pelotonia Kids Cincinnati event kicks off at 9:00am with registration and a wide range of kid-friendly activities at Mason Sports Park. Participants can decorate their bikes, fill out tribute bibs to honor loved ones, enjoy Pelotonia face paint, and fuel up with snacks like granola bars, fruit pouches, and water bottles. In a festive twist, kids can also celebrate Christmas in July with baked goods from Santa and ice cream from Special Neat Treats.
At 10:00am, the 2-mile ride will begin. The approachable looped course is on a fully paved trail, ideal for kids of all skill levels including those with training wheels. Following the ride, families are invited to gather at the After Party at BC’s Brewing Company (4064 US 42) starting at 11:00am to celebrate their accomplishments and the community’s shared commitment to ending cancer.
Registration for the ride is free, and families are encouraged to take part in fundraising. Any child who raises $25 by July 20 will receive an official event T-shirt. Volunteers are needed to help ensure a safe and memorable experience for all. If interested, sign up here.

SpokesKids Returns to Granville to Host Riders Ages 8-14

| July 8, 2025

Pelotonia Kids is a series of kids cycling events to engage the next generation of Pelotonia participants. In collaboration with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC—James), 100 percent of every Pelotonia Kids participant-raised dollar will be directed to innovative pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
SpokesKids returns to Granville on Saturday, July 26, inviting youth participants ages 8 to 14 to take part in a powerful community event that blends purpose with fun.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community volunteers with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
Founded in 2017 by a group of determined kids who weren’t yet old enough to ride in Pelotonia, SpokesKIDS began as a way for them to support loved ones facing cancer. What started as a grassroots idea has now grown into a powerful youth movement, proving year after year that kids can absolutely make an impact.
Now organized by Brittany Smith and Kelly Clarry, SpokesKids has raised nearly $75,000 for pediatric cancer since starting.
Brittany and Kelly each have deeply personal connections to cancer. Kelly’s husband, Yuri, passed away in 2017 after battling stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. For Kelly, the Kids Ride became a meaningful way to help her sons, Oliver and William, feel supported by a community that understands their journey.
Brittany’s husband, Tim, is a cancer survivor. A medically retired firefighter, Tim was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2018, and their family’s experience continues to inspire their involvement.
Brittany’s son, Gavin, has been instrumental in organizing SpokesKids during the past three years. Now 14, Gavin was only 7 years old when his father was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, he has worked with several charities and advocacy groups, using his voice to champion lung cancer research and raise awareness.

“Pelotonia kids provides an opportunity for kids to make a difference. We have several families in our community who have been affected by not only pediatric cancer, but also parents who have battled cancer. This gives kids the opportunity to make a difference and support their friends and family,” said Brittany.

Beginning at OneLove Café and Bike Shop (415 South Main Street, Granville, OH 43023), this 8-mile ride offers young Riders the chance to make a meaningful difference in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Every SpokesKids participant commits to raising a minimum of $100, and thanks to Pelotonia’s 100% model, every dollar raised will directly support pediatric cancer research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Since its inception, SpokesKIDS has raised over $50,000, and the momentum continues to build.
This year’s ride will take place on Saturday, July 26, at OneLove Café and Bike Shop in Granville. Rider check-in will take place from 10:00am to 10:30am, with the official ride send-off at 11:00am. Riders will travel an 8-mile route along the T.J. Evans Trail, which includes a scenic pass-through downtown Granville.
The route will be fully supported, featuring a Granville Police Department escort and EMS support from the Granville Fire Department to ensure a safe experience for all participants. Helmets and closed-toe shoes are required for all riders.
Whether you’re riding with friends, family, a school group, or on your own, SpokesKIDS welcomes all children ages 8 to14, regardless of school district or Peloton affiliation. This event is all about coming together to support one another and raise funds for lifesaving research. No matter where you’re from or who you’re riding for, you can help make a difference.

SpokesKIDS Jr. Gears Up for Its Ninth Annual Ride in Granville

SpokesKIDS Jr., one of Pelotonia’s longest-running youth cycling events, returns for its ninth annual ride on Saturday, July 26, in Granville. Designed for children in pre-K through 3rd grade, this ride gives young participants the opportunity to experience the energy and spirit of Ride Weekend while supporting lifesaving pediatric cancer research.
Each event is uniquely local, planned by Pelotonia community volunteers with support from the organization, including event logistics, equipment rentals, promotional materials, and branded merchandise. Ride formats vary by location, with routes designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities.
Founded in 2016 by Nathaniel Hopping, who was just five years old at the time, SpokesKIDS Jr. was created to bring the Pelotonia experience to younger kids.

“My father rode in Pelotonia my entire life. Watching him ride inspired me to try to start a ride so that kids my age could ride too,” Nathaniel said.

Nathaniel is still at the helm of SpokesKIDS Jr. as its lead organizer. He is also riding the 50-mile route this year in his second Pelotonia Ride Weekend.
SpokesKids will take place at Wildwood Park (785 W. Broadway, Granville, OH 43023) with check-in beginning at 9:15am, and the ride starting at 10:00am. New this year, the start time has been moved up by half an hour to accommodate families who may have riders participating in both SpokesKids Jr. and SpokesKIDS (for ages 8–14), which also takes place on the 26th in Granville.

“We’ve always tried to make a kids’ version of Pelotonia. We have a 1-mile route for our youngest riders and a 3-mile ride for our older kids,” Nathaniel said.

“Both routes have rest stops along the way, and we have a finish line celebration to try to make it as much like Pelotonia as we can for the kids.”

Riders are staged into groups with volunteer escorts and roll out by route distance. The Granville Police and Fire Departments assist with traffic management to keep the course safe. Both routes follow the T.J. Evans Trail, and riders are cheered on by supporters as they approach the finish line at the College Town House, where they’re welcomed to celebrate with music, games, and pizza donated by Donatos.
SpokesKIDS Jr. has had hundreds of Riders participate during the past eight years and has raised nearly $11,000 for pediatric cancer research. Thanks to generous sponsors like Crock Orthodontics, Newark Animal Hospital, and Park National Bank, each participant receives a ride T-shirt featuring a custom design by a Granville Elementary student, along with a swag bag to commemorate the day.
Last year, the ride took on extra meaning when a young girl who had beaten cancer rode alongside her parents.
“I got the opportunity to talk with them after the ride,” Nathaniel said. “It was a really inspiring experience.”
SpokesKIDS Jr. is more than just a bike ride — it’s a celebration of community, courage, and kids coming together to make a difference.
“Pelotonia Kids is an incredible part of Pelotonia,” Nathaniel added, “and we are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this event and help save lives through important pediatric cancer research. I hope that we can raise as much money for pediatric cancer research as possible and give the kids that participate in the ride an amazing experience.”
