Hey there...With my mother and sister both cancer survivors, I always felt as though someday I would fight my own battle. I never thought it would come at the age of 40 when on June 4, 2007, following a colonoscopy, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. As they say, our lives changed dramatically that day. With my doctors at The James, we developed an aggressive treatment plan which included chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. My family and friends were committed to battle. My associates at Abercrombie & Fitch were totally behind me in every way. From complete flexibility at the office to extensive emotional support throughout the organization, I was able to focus on getting better.
I was deemed cancer free following surgery, took on some more chemo and despite a few bumps, we achieved a very good prognosis. The not so funny thing is that despite being cancer free, the disease never leaves you. Mentally, it took months to say that I am cancer free and I still hesitate when discussing my health. No need to jinx a good thing...
Shortly after, a good friend called and pitched me the idea of starting a non-profit to generate funding for cancer research at The James. After meeting with Mike Caliguiri, I became impressed with OSU's commitment to make this thing BIG. So, during the summer of 2008, I started Bike Event, LLC with the goal of creating a nationally recognized fundraising brand.
With the suppport and partnership of our community, Pelotonia was born. We love that Pelotonia did not have meaning when first created. A derivative of Peloton, the group that sticks together in a cycling race for mutual benefit, Pelotonia reflects our community working together to defeat cancer.
In our first year, 2,265 riders saddled up and raised $4,511,866 - 100% of which was given to the research effort at OSU.
I am thrilled to lead Pelotonia. I believe we will again offer an amazing experience that will generate significant funding for research at The James. Please join me August 20th to 22nd by riding in Pelotonia or by making a contribution. Thanks and be well, Tom
