I participated in this event last year, and I'll continue to be involved with Pelotonia as long as I have the God-given abilities to do so! My father died early (59), 7/22/91, primarily due to cancer, and this illness has taken the lives of his twin brother and his sisters as well. Last year, a new and vibrant friend of mine, Roxanne, was taken at age 32 due to liver and colon cancer within a year of her diagnosis. Seth, a 13 yr. old boy, had a great impact on me as he displayed an indescribable courage during his fight with leukemia. Bekah, a friend of mine, is currently dealing with breast cancer. I have a friend, Joe Aebi, who at 41 and with his wife Jess has three beautiful children all under 7 y/o - was diagnosed within the past year with stomach/liver cancer, and was taken home way too swiftly and way too young, on 7-31-10.
Prayer and raising money for research are the two most direct and practical exercises that I can do--we can do--to fight and defeat this disease. Cancer sucks, but I often think of it as a mirror that reflects back on us who are without, reminding us to be involved in this gift called life because we can. I look forward to riding in this event because having the ability to ride is indeed a gift, but I'm truly attracted to Pelotonia because, as only a simple event, it has a profound way of uniting us as a team. I saw evidence of that last year, and I'm confident this year that together we'll take another swipe at cancer and take a step closer to ending it.
So I will ride in honor of the life of my Dad, and Roxanne, and Seth, and in honor of our friends who have gone before. This year I will ride especially for my friend Joe Aebi. ...But I also definitely ride as a celebration for all of us--expressing our joy for this sweet gift of life we have now on earth, no matter how long or how short it may be!
If you have the means and would like to contribute, thank you for your financial help and support, and many thanks especially for passing the good word....this has to be a mega-team effort!! Thank you for your support--IT DOES MATTER!!
