My story begins with my mother who lost her courageous battle with ovarian cancer when I was 20. In my late 20's I lost my grandfather to cancer. In my early 40's I lost my father in law to cancer. For those of you who are dog lovers, we lost our Corgi to cancer two years ago.
Along the way, I watched as the disease took others away from their loved ones. I felt the pain of the survivors.... and every time I heard the word cancer or heard of a new diagnosis, it brought me back to my mother and her fight with the disease. She never let it bring her down and I took inspiration from that.
It is my hope that some day the C word will come to mean Cure. I believe that with fund raising events such as the Pelotonia Bike Tour and the research being done at The James Cancer Hospital this will be a reality in the near future.
I rode the 102 mile route to Athens in 2009. What an awesome experience! I took inspiration from the hundreds of people waiting along the roadside to "cheer" us on. It should have been the other way around. They were the ones I was cheering for, I was just doing what I love to do..... riding!
