My name is Andy; I live in Westerville with my wife, Heather, and dog, Grainger. I am a childhood cancer survivor; diagnosed in 1990 with a Wilms' Tumor, I underwent two operations to remove the tumor (and my kidney) as well as multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Hard to believe that happened all when I was in third and fourth grade. After treatment I have been cancer free and pretty healthy; however, the emotional toll weighed on me for years after and my immune system was compromised as my body began to heal.
Back in 2006, my dad was also diagnosed with cancer. Luckily, due to advances in monitoring and detection, as well as treatment, after early detection and surgery he was and remains cancer free. It was an all too real reminder, however, that this disease affects so many people and we never know when it will strike those who are closest to us. No one is immune!
Now my memories and experience have prompted me to take an active stance toward cancer prevention and helping to raise money for research. I began casually road biking back in 2005 and Pelotonia seems like a great way to not only push myself physically, but also in my hope to find new treatments and preventions for cancer.
My family, my friends, and many more people that I will meet in the future will be affected by this disease. Please donate and get involved!
