Cancer is very prevalent in my family, but thanks to early detection and the continuous advancements made in research and treatment I have been very lucky to have a family of survivors. While my research will focus on acute myeloid leukemia, the cancers in my family range from pancreatic to prostate and breast to lymphoma. In addition to cancers of all types occurring in my family, I am also a cancer researcher in-training at The James. I cannot say enough about the opportunities The James has given me in just a year there as a student. The facilities, the expertise, the mentoring by world-class researchers in my field of interest, acute myeloid leukemia, are just a few of the numerous opportunities that have been made available to me and the hundreds of other trainees here.

While the work here never really stops (the lights in our lab are notorious for being on all night as students and research scientists alike tease out the pathways leading to the causes of cancer). Even when we leave the lab, the work never really stops as we read at the coffee shops and discuss our ideas with friends and family who have experienced cancer first-hand. I am especially thankful for those researchers who paved the way to the treatments that allowed my family to be one of survivors and I intend to Pay it forward as we like to say here at Ohio State. Hopefully my contributions in the lab will have an impact on patients in the very near future.

Next time you are on campus, take a look at the 8th floor windows of the Biomedical Research Tower facing Ohio Stadium....I bet the lights will be on, even in the middle of the night. These are your Pelotonia donations hard at work allowing The James and all of us associated with it to lead the way to tomorrow's cancer treatments.
